BitMEX Exits Stage: Exchange Announces Shutdown Amid Consolidation
BitMEX, one of the largest cryptocurrency derivatives exchanges, will shut down on September 23, 2026 at 04:00 UTC. The decision comes after a strategic review by HDR Global Trading Limited.
The exchange has already halted new account registrations as of July 23 and will transition to reduce-only behavior starting August 26. On that date, users can only close or reduce their existing exposure.
After the August 26 cutoff, BitMEX will forcibly close any remaining open positions before shutdown. Any position still open at 04:00:00 UTC on September 23 will be closed immediately.
The exchange warns users who fail to act that they may face punishing fees, including an account fee of $50 per month or 1% annualized on residual balances, whichever is higher.
