BitMEX Shutdown Sparks Crypto Exchange Shakeout
BitMEX's decision to cease operations on September 23 has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency market, raising concerns about the survival of smaller exchanges. The exchange's utility token BMEX plummeted more than 90% after the announcement, and BitMEX itself fell out of the top 10 among derivatives exchanges.
Analysts say that the top five platforms account for around 80% of global spot trading volume, making it increasingly difficult for smaller exchanges to remain profitable. According to Roshan Daria, a restructuring adviser, 'the problem is structural, not cyclical.'
The regulatory environment is also changing in favor of larger exchanges, with Coinbase and Kraken launching perpetual futures under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's framework.
