BitMEX Shuts Down After 11 Years

Share

BitMEX, the crypto derivatives exchange behind the popular perpetual swap product, will shut down on September 23rd, 2026. The exchange has been operational for over 11 years and claims to have never experienced a hack that resulted in lost funds.

The decision was made after a strategic review of the business and the broader crypto industry. In a statement, BitMEX noted its origins and the impact it had on the market: 'When BitMEX started in 2014, our mission was simple: provide access to professional-grade crypto derivatives for everyone.' It also highlighted its innovation with the perpetual swap product.

Users are advised to close open positions and withdraw funds as soon as possible. Risk limits will be applied from August 26th at 04:00 UTC, preventing users from opening new positions. Any positions still open at the Closure Time on September 23rd, 2026 will be force closed.
