BitMEX Shuts Down After 11 Years Amid Regulatory Pressure
BitMEX, one of the pioneering crypto derivatives exchanges, will cease operations permanently on September 23, 2026. The platform's flagship exchange, HDR Global Trading Limited, announced its decision to shut down after 11 years in business.
The exchange, which introduced 100x-leverage perpetual swaps to the market and processed over $3 trillion in cumulative trading volume, will stop accepting new account registrations immediately. Users are urged to close positions and withdraw funds before the final deadline on September 23.
BitMEX's legal troubles began in 2020 when the Commodity Futures Trading Commission reached a settlement with the exchange over regulatory compliance violations. The CFTC action centered on BitMEX operating as an unregistered derivatives exchange and failing to implement adequate anti-money laundering controls, among other issues. Co-founders Arthur Hayes, Benjamin Delo, and Samuel Reed faced personal legal consequences from that period.
The company has stated that its reserves exceed customer liabilities and noted no history of losses from security breaches. The shutdown marks the end of an era for BitMEX, which was one of the original institutions of the crypto derivatives market, introducing the perpetual swap product that is now standard across major derivatives venues.
