BitMEX Shuts Down Amid Increased Competition
BitMEX is shutting down after 11 years of operation, with the exchange announcing its permanent closure on September 23, 2026. The decision was made following a strategic review by HDR Global Trading Limited, BitMEX's owner and operator.
The platform, founded in 2014 by Arthur Hayes, Benjamin Delo, and Samuel Reed, pioneered the high-leverage perpetual swap. This product became a core component of the crypto derivatives market, with major exchanges eventually adopting similar offerings.
BitMEX's influence grew significantly during its early years, with the exchange becoming one of the largest venues for Bitcoin derivatives. However, its market position weakened over time as competitors expanded their derivatives offerings and captured a larger share of global trading activity.
CZ, founder of Binance, reflected on BitMEX's legacy, highlighting its role in introducing 100x leveraged perpetual swaps in 2014. He noted that the product helped transform crypto derivatives from a market centered largely on traditional delivery futures.
