BitMEX Shuts Down Amid Market Shift to Perp Contracts
BitMEX, a cryptocurrency exchange and derivatives platform that pioneered crypto perpetual swaps in 2016, announced it will shut down operations in September. This decision comes as the market for these products reaches record volume. According to experts, the closure could be a symptom of the industry clearing out mid-tier exchanges due to compliance costs and liquidity network effects.
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) approved Kalshi's Bitcoin perp (BTCPERP) contract in recent months, while exchanges launched pre-IPO perpetual contracts. BitMEX's decision to close its doors may have been anticipated by the market, given the growing competition and increased regulatory scrutiny.
A proposed class action lawsuit filed against BitMEX accuses the platform of theft and insider trading. The plaintiffs claim that BitMEX ran an internal 'Insider Trading Desk' with 'God access,' allowing the company to trade against its customers. The lawsuit alleges that this desk could continue trading during server freezes that locked out other traders.
The market seems to be clearing out mid-tier exchanges, and compliance costs are squeezing these platforms out. BitMEX's owner and operator, HDR Global Trading Limited, cited difficult decisions in closing operations.
