BitMEX Shuts Down Amid Regulatory Woes and Changing Crypto Landscape
BitMEX is shutting down its trading operations on September 23 at 4:00 a.m. UTC, marking the end of an era for one of the oldest cryptocurrency derivatives exchanges.
The closure comes after a two-year-long attempt to sell the company, which included negotiations with rival exchanges and payments platform Exodus, but ultimately failed to produce a deal, CoinDesk reported.
Potential buyers were concerned about the founders' continued equity control, BitMEX's past regulatory issues, and its slowing growth. Co-founders Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo, and Samuel Reed stepped back from daily operations after being criminally charged in 2020 for failing to implement adequate anti-money laundering (AML) procedures.
The sale process targeted a valuation of around $1 billion, but was complicated by the combination of these factors, along with a competitive and rapidly evolving crypto exchange landscape. The closure signals a broader shift in the industry, as newer competitors like Binance, Bybit, and OKX have gained significant market share with more advanced products and stronger compliance frameworks.
