BitMEX Shuts Down Amidst Sharp Decline in BMEX Token Value
BitMEX, once a dominant force in the crypto derivatives market, has announced its closure. The exchange will cease operations on September 23 after a strategic review by its parent company. This decision has sent shockwaves through the crypto community, with the native token BMEX plummeting approximately 90% in value.
The token's primary utility is tied to exchange-specific benefits such as fee reductions and platform incentives. With the exchange shutting down, these perks effectively expire, contributing to the sharp decline in BMEX's value. The company has halted new registrations and allows users to withdraw funds immediately, with a final wind-down date set for late September.
BitMEX pioneered perpetual swaps in 2014 but struggled to maintain its market share as competitors scaled faster and regulatory scrutiny intensified. US authorities had previously brought cases against the exchange over compliance controls, and BitMEX paid significant penalties tied to anti-money-laundering failures.
