BitMEX Shuts Down as Crypto Derivatives Market Shifts Away
BitMEX, once one of the most influential cryptocurrency derivatives exchanges in the world, is shutting down after over a decade in operation.
The exchange announced it will cease trading operations on September 23, 2026, bringing an end to its 11-year run that helped transform the way traders speculate on digital assets.
BitMEX's decline began as competitors like Binance, Bybit, and OKX captured market share with deeper liquidity, broader product offerings, and more aggressive global expansion.
The exchange's market share has fallen from over 57% to less than 0.01%, according to Reuters and Kaiko data, while daily trading volume has dropped to approximately $400,000.
