BitMEX to Shut Down Permanently on September 23, 2026
BitMEX, one of the oldest and most well-known cryptocurrency derivatives exchanges, will shut down permanently on September 23, 2026. The exchange has been in operation since 2014 and was a pioneer in introducing leveraged trading to the crypto market. At its peak, BitMEX processed billions of dollars in daily volume.
However, the decline of BitMEX was gradual and long-term. Regulatory issues in the US forced out its founders in 2020, and competitors moved faster on product development, compliance, and customer incentives. By mid-2026, BitMEX's daily trading volume had shrunk to a mere fraction of what it once was.
The closure is seen as an orderly wind-down rather than a collapse, with the company assuring customers that their assets are fully backed and withdrawable. This is in contrast to other exchanges like Mt. Gox, Cryptopia, and FTX, which have experienced more tumultuous endings.
One of the main reasons for BitMEX's decline was its failure to keep up with the changing landscape of exchange incentives. Competitors like Binance, Bybit, and Bitget offered higher rewards, bonuses, and airdrops to attract customers, while BitMEX stuck to its traditional fee discount through referral links.
