BitMEX Users Flock to Withdraw Funds Ahead of Shutdown
BitMEX users have been withdrawing their funds at an accelerated rate since the exchange announced its shutdown on September 23. A newly created wallet has withdrawn a significant amount of Bitcoin, totaling $29.9 million in value, or approximately 468.3 BTC. This is the largest single withdrawal from BitMEX since the announcement and underscores the urgency with which users should withdraw their funds.
The exchange's shutdown was met with widespread regulatory pressure and declining market share, causing it to lose its position as a dominant force in Bitcoin perpetual swaps. Binance, Bybit, and OKX have been gaining traction in recent years, contributing to BitMEX's decline. The large withdrawal from the newly created wallet suggests that users are actively managing their positions and securing their assets ahead of the exchange's closure.
BitMEX has stated that it will continue to allow withdrawals until its shutdown date, but users are advised to act promptly to avoid any disruption. This event highlights the importance of self-custody in the cryptocurrency space, as large holders become increasingly cautious about leaving their assets on centralized exchanges, particularly those that are winding down.
