BitMEX's Perpetual Swap Legacy Lives On as Exchange Closes

BitMEX's closure marks the end of an era for the pioneering crypto exchange that revolutionized derivatives trading. Founded in 2016, BitMEX's perpetual swap, a continuous futures contract without expiry dates, became the industry standard. Its success was built on three key innovations: the funding rate, mark price, and liquidation engine.

The perpetual swap addressed the limitations of traditional futures contracts, which required traders to manage expiry dates, rolls, and changing basis across maturities. BitMEX's product offered a single, continuously traded instrument that attracted both speculative and professional demand. Retail traders liked it for straightforward leveraged exposure, while professionals used it for hedging and arbitrage.

BitMEX's original XBTUSD contract was margined in Bitcoin, but its competitors soon shifted to dollar-margined contracts, such as USDT- and USDC-margined perpetuals. This change transformed the product from a Bitcoin-native instrument into a standard derivative across the entire crypto market.

BitMEX's decline is attributed to the shift in liquidity towards broader ecosystems built around its competitors. Regulation also played a significant role, with US authorities bringing charges against BitMEX in 2020 and imposing a $200 million penalty in 2025. The enforcement actions damaged management continuity, market access, and institutional confidence.
