Bitmine's Aggressive Ethereum Buys Raise Questions About Investment Strategy
Tom Lee's company Bitmine has been buying Ethereum aggressively for 14 months, with significant purchases in August. The company is designed to buy and hold as much of one crypto asset as possible, using new shares issued to fund its purchases.
Bitmine bought 9,926 ETH worth around $19 million on Aug. 17, followed by another 32,447 ETH just six days later. This purchase was part of a larger trend in which the company has paid $19.1 billion for Ethereum that was worth $10.9 billion as of May 31.
While Bitmine's strategy may seem like a good idea for individual investors, it is not advisable to follow its lead without understanding the underlying model. The business relies on issuing new shares and using the capital raised to buy more coins, which can dilute existing shareholders' stakes.
Lee believes that Ethereum will benefit from emerging trends such as asset tokenization and staking, which he thinks will create stable financial returns for institutional investors. However, it's worth noting that his past price predictions have not been very accurate, so a long-term perspective is recommended when considering an investment in Ethereum.
