BitRiver Founder Detained Amid Ongoing Fraud Case, Company's Finances in Shambles
Russia's largest crypto mining company, BitRiver, is facing serious financial troubles after its founder, Igor Runets, was moved from house arrest to a pretrial detention facility. The decision comes as part of an ongoing fraud case against Runets, who is accused of large-scale fraud under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Russian Criminal Code.
The prosecutors allege that Runets's company received nearly $1 billion in damages from En+, a group of Russian metallurgical and energy companies. Investigators claim that the equipment was never delivered, and the funds were never returned. This is not the first time Runets has faced custody restrictions; he was arrested in February on suspicion of concealing assets meant to cover tax debts.
BitRiver's financial troubles are deepening, with Fox Group, its owner, estimated to carry around $9.2 million in debt. The company filed for bankruptcy after determining it lacked sufficient funds or assets to repay what it owes.
