Bitstamp's Anomalous XRP Price Plunge Masks Broader Market Liquidity
XRP's price plummeted 37% on Bitstamp in just one minute on Saturday, August 22. The massive drop occurred in a single candle, known as a wick, from $1.69739 to $1.06689. However, other exchanges such as Kraken and OKX showed much smaller ranges of 21.4% and 19.1%, respectively.
The sudden price movement was part of a broader liquidation wave that affected the wider market. According to CoinGlass data, $523 million in crypto liquidations occurred within one hour, with $448 million of longs and $74.76 million of shorts being affected.
Despite the significant drop on Bitstamp, XRP's price soon recovered and converged with major spot prices across other exchanges. The cryptocurrency still maintained substantial derivatives exposure, with $3.66 billion in open interest remaining after the drop.
