Bittensor has overhauled its staking system with the Root Reborn upgrade. This transformation turns root staking into a competitive allocation system, where validators are no longer passive collectors of rewards.
The new system allows validators to set public root weights and curate baskets of subnet alpha holdings. They can then reinvest dividends instead of selling them for TAO at regular intervals. This approach is designed to eliminate forced selling and its associated tax implications.
The Root Reborn upgrade addresses several structural issues, including persistent sell pressure on subnet tokens and the loss of optionality for early subnet investors. The protocol provides transparent tracking tools to monitor basket composition, net asset value, and lifetime returns.
