Bittrex Founder Richie Lai on Security, Regulation, and Exchange Exit
Richie Lai is a cybersecurity specialist and cryptocurrency entrepreneur who co-founded Bittrex, a Seattle-based exchange established in 2014.
Lai's background in information security and vulnerability research made him an ideal candidate to tackle the security challenges of cryptocurrency exchanges. He later served as Bittrex's Chief Information Officer and CEO during the company's final period of U.S. operations.
Bittrex became one of the better-known U.S. cryptocurrency exchanges, building its reputation around security, custody infrastructure, and a broad selection of digital assets. At its peak, the exchange served over 600,000 active retail and institutional users and approximately 1.2 million customers overall.
Lai's role at Bittrex changed significantly over time. He became CEO of the U.S. business by 2023 and announced in March that year that Bittrex would wind down its U.S. operations due to an increasingly difficult regulatory and economic environment.
