Bitwise Adds Staking Details to Spot Ethereum ETF Filing
Bitwise has submitted an amended S-1 registration statement for its spot Ethereum ETF. The updated filing includes details about staking mechanics, validator operations, slashing risk, and staking-yield accounting.
The inclusion of staking in the filing is significant because it addresses one of the biggest unresolved questions surrounding spot Ethereum ETFs. Staking allows ETH holders to participate in network validation and earn rewards, which can affect their returns.
However, the SEC has not approved staking for spot ETH ETFs, and this filing is merely a proposal. Regulators may require more comfort around custody, investor protection, securities-law implications, and operational risk before allowing it.
The market should not treat this as an approval, but rather recognize that issuers are pushing for Ethereum ETFs to become more than passive spot exposure. If the SEC eventually allows staking, the ETH ETF market could look very different.
