Bitwise CIO: Crypto Winter Only 49% Deep
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan argues that the current crypto downturn is fundamentally healthier than previous bear markets, citing stronger infrastructure and a favorable regulatory environment as key factors. The current market decline of 49% from its peak near $4.4 trillion in total market capitalization is significantly less severe compared to the 88% fall in 2018.
Hougan notes that the 2022 crash, which saw Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) experience a significant downturn, was exacerbated by regulatory pressures and a lack of infrastructure. In contrast, today's market has seen the emergence of trillion-dollar stablecoin and tokenization markets, as well as increased investment from institutions like BlackRock and Apollo.
The numbers support Hougan's claim, with the current correction being significantly less severe than previous cycles. However, some analysts are cautioning that long-term holders have realized significant losses, which could be a sign of maximum market depression.
