Bitwise CIO: Current Crypto Downturn Less Severe Than Previous Bear Markets
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan believes that the current cryptocurrency downturn is fundamentally healthier than previous bear markets due to improved infrastructure, a favorable regulatory environment, and the emergence of new markets.
Hougan compared the current market to those in 2018 and 2022, noting that Bitcoin (BTC) has lost only 49% from its peak near $4.4 trillion in total market capitalization, whereas it fell by 88% in 2018 and roughly 73% in 2022.
He pointed to the growth of stablecoins, tokenization markets, and a positive regulatory climate as key factors that distinguish the current market from previous ones.
Additionally, Hougan highlighted the presence of ETFs and BlackRock's involvement in decentralized finance (DeFi) as indicators of the market's health.
