Bitwise Launches Automated Token Portfolios with Coinbase Global
Bitwise Asset Management is launching three automated token portfolios (ATPs) that use tokenized U.S. stocks issued by Coinbase Global. These ATPs hold a professionally selected basket of stocks in a crypto wallet, with each company's shares represented as crypto tokens.
The main point of these ATPs is to provide flexibility in capital usage for investors who need to tap their capital for collateral or want to use it in decentralized finance (DeFi) apps. Unlike holding traditional stocks directly, tokenized assets can be used as collateral and have the potential to offer more flexibility for users.
Bitwise's flagship ATP is called Mag7X, which holds eight stocks at an equal weight, including Space Exploration Technologies. It charges a 0.15% access fee, similar to what investors would pay on an index ETF. However, it's essential to note that the rebalancing process in these ATPs counts as a sale for tax purposes.
Regulations regarding tokenized securities are still evolving, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is finalizing its exemptions by 2027. This could lead to changes in how ATPs are used and regulated in the future.
