Bitwise Proposes Staking Mechanics for Spot Ethereum ETF
Bitwise has filed an amended S-1 registration statement for its spot Ethereum ETF. The amendment includes language around staking mechanics, validator operations, slashing risk, and staking-yield accounting.
The addition of staking mechanics is significant because it touches on the heart of what ETH is: a proof-of-stake network that rewards holders for participating in validation.
However, the SEC has not approved staking inside spot Ethereum ETFs. Bitwise's filing is a proposal, not a green light. The uncertainty surrounding staking is a major unresolved question around spot Ethereum ETFs.
The SEC still needs to decide whether staking can be part of a spot Ethereum ETF structure under its review standards. Issuers may want staking because it makes ETH products more complete, but regulators may require more comfort around custody, investor protection, securities-law implications, and operational risk before allowing it.
