Bitwise Says Crypto Winter is Only 49% Deep, Citing Emerging Markets
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan argues that the current crypto downturn is fundamentally healthier than previous bear markets due to stronger infrastructure, a favorable regulatory environment, and emerging trillion-dollar stablecoin and tokenization markets.
The current market has seen Bitcoin lose 49% of its peak near $4.4 trillion in total market capitalization, but Hougan notes that this decline is less severe compared to the 88% drop in 2018 and 73% drop in 2022 from cycle peaks to bear market bottoms.
Hougan points out that today's market has several key distinctions from previous cycles, including stablecoins nearing $3 trillion, tokenization markets reaching $200 trillion, a positive regulatory climate, and better tokenomics. He also highlights the presence of ETFs, BlackRock building on DeFi, and rising concerns about fiat currency.
Glassnode reported that Bitcoin's drop to $60,000 imposed drastic psychological pressure on long-term holders, but Alphractal founder Joao Wedson offered a more measured view, noting that net unrealized profit/loss for long-term holders stands at 0.36, meaning they are still in profit.
