Bitwise Unveils Tokenized Stock Portfolios with Coinbase
Bitwise has launched tokenized stock portfolios, which allow investors to hold US stocks in their own non-custodial wallets. This is made possible by Coinbase's tokenized US stocks, which went live on the Base network just a day prior to Bitwise's launch.
The key difference between these portfolios and traditional mutual funds or ETFs is that asset custody remains with the investor, rather than being handed over to a commingled investment vehicle. This structure allows for greater flexibility in portfolio design, as investors can create strategies containing only three or four names, rather than dozens of stocks.
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan emphasized the advantage of this tokenized structure, stating that it 'does not have to resemble traditional asset management.' He likened on-chain asset management to YouTube, which is not just an internet version of television. The assets remain in the investor's wallet, and the model comes to them.
The three initial portfolios available are Mag7X, Robotics ATP, and AI Leaders ATP. Mag7X contains seven equally weighted stocks plus SpaceX, while Robotics ATP targets humanoid robotics companies, autonomous vehicles, and warehouse automation. AI Leaders ATP features Nvidia, Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, SpaceX, Tesla, and Sandisk.
The methodology access fee is set at 0.15%, with trading and platform fees charged separately. Bitwise emphasizes that it does not independently verify the backing claims of Coinbase's tokenized stocks, nor does it make any representation regarding the rights or redeemability of the tokens.
