BITX Suffers Record Losses as Leverage Trap Catches Traders Off Guard
The BITX 2x Bitcoin Strategy ETF has seen its value plummet by 55.86% in 2026, wiping out nearly half of its initial investment from the start of the year. This downturn has occurred despite the fund's intention to deliver twice the daily return of Bitcoin using futures and financing.
The largest 2x leveraged Bitcoin futures ETF in the U.S., BITX, is down 77.58% since August 2025, with a current net asset value of $1.03 billion against total assets of $3.91 billion. The fund's gross leverage footprint stands at roughly 3.8x.
A key factor contributing to the fund's decline is its daily reset mechanism, which allows it to promise twice Bitcoin's move on any given session but also causes it to drift from a simple '2x Bitcoin' outcome over longer periods. This can lead to compounded losses during market downturns and require a substantial bounce to recover.
