BlackRock Bets on Bitcoin's Risk-Off Narrative
BlackRock's Head of Digital Assets Robbie Mitchnick believes that bitcoin's risk-off narrative is the one to bet on in the long term. In a recent interview, he stated that the cryptocurrency has characteristics that can make it behave like a risk-on asset, but its fundamental risk and return drivers point in the opposite direction to equities and other traditional assets.
Mitchnick argues that global debt and deficit levels are a major concern for investors, and those concerns are not going away. He believes that investors worried about fiscal conditions are drawn to bitcoin as a store of value, particularly among younger demographics whose parents' generation may have favored gold for the same purpose.
BlackRock's IBIT is the largest spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund, with over $76 billion in assets under management. Mitchnick said that recent pressure on equities and choppy fixed income markets while bitcoin and gold rallied are consistent with BlackRock's view of bitcoin as a portfolio diversifier.
