BlackRock: Bitcoin Price Drop Due to Leverage Unwind, Not Core Thesis Collapse

BlackRock attributes Bitcoin's recent price drop from $126K to $63K as a 'positioning correction' rather than a collapse of its core thesis. According to the asset manager, the drawdown was driven by cascading liquidations following a leverage unwind, with derivative market positioning and elevated open interest playing a significant role.

BlackRock's report highlights that Bitcoin's correlation with traditional risk assets has been high due to the build-up and subsequent unwinding of speculative positions in derivatives. The firm notes that this is a mechanical process rather than an enduring change in Bitcoin's fundamental relationship to other assets.

The asset manager also emphasizes that Bitcoin's longer-term characteristics still align with its 'low-correlation diversifier' framing, pointing out that the asset has repeatedly shown resilience around major political and macro shocks. In fact, BlackRock claims that Bitcoin produced positive returns and outperformed equities and gold after hostilities began between the US and Iran in February 2026.

BlackRock's reassurances arrive as parts of the market have questioned Bitcoin's 'digital gold' framing in the near term. However, the firm argues that elevated correlation can emerge due to leverage and risk-off liquidation mechanics, not a permanent re-rating of Bitcoin's fundamental relationship to other assets.
