BlackRock-Lead Consortium Pools $15M for Bitcoin Security Research
The Bitcoin Security Consortium (BSC), a $15 million initiative backed by nine major institutions, has officially launched to fund open-source security research and developer-ecosystem support for Bitcoin.
Founding members include Strategy, BlackRock ($BLK), Fidelity Digital Assets, and Coinbase ($COIN), with each institution contributing independently while coordinating on research priorities and the direction of support.
The consortium's focus is on addressing the 'resource asymmetry' between the scale of value secured by Bitcoin and the limited funding available to safeguard it. In its first year, BSC will prioritize post-quantum cryptography, with a long-term goal of translating funded research into concrete Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIPs) and gaining community traction.
The launch reflects a broader shift in institutional posture from exposure to stewardship, as major BTC-linked firms transition from buying and holding to actively underwriting network security. Critics argue that the BSC's structure preserves decentralization optics by pooling support without consolidating protocol control.
