BlackRock-Led Consortium Invests $15 Million in Quantum-Secure Bitcoin
Eight major companies have formed the Bitcoin Security Consortium to ensure the long-term security of Bitcoin. The consortium, which includes BlackRock and Coinbase, will donate a total of $15 million over three years to enhance Bitcoin's security.
The focus of this initiative is on post-quantum cryptography research, which can counter the potential threats of quantum computing. Currently, Bitcoin relies on elliptic curve cryptography for proof of ownership and transaction authorization.
A quantum computer powerful enough to run the Shor algorithm could derive a private key from a public key, potentially leading to the theft of funds. However, such a computer does not currently exist.
