BlackRock Lowers IBIT Conversion Threshold to $1M
BlackRock has reduced the minimum amount required for investors to convert their Bitcoin holdings into shares of its iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) from $25 million to $1 million, effective July 2026. This move makes it easier for a broader group of wealthy investors and institutions to access this conversion service.
The previous threshold was lowered by 96%, according to an August 25 Bloomberg report. BlackRock's head of digital assets, Robbie Mitchnick, stated that 'it's going to keep growing because we keep expanding the access.'
IBIT has processed over $5 billion in transactions through this process, which allows eligible holders to transfer their Bitcoin into the ETF structure and receive shares representing comparable exposure. This avoids requiring investors to sell their Bitcoin for cash and then purchase ETF shares separately.
The reduction of the minimum threshold could encourage more large holders to consider transferring their assets into a regulated financial product, such as IBIT. However, it's essential for investors to understand that this trade-off comes with surrendering direct control over their Bitcoin.
