BlackRock Paves the Way for Institutional Crypto Adoption
BlackRock's efforts to bring Bitcoin wealth onto Wall Street are gaining momentum. The firm has made it easier for investors to swap large crypto holdings for shares in its spot Bitcoin ETF, IBIT. This process allows them to retain exposure to Bitcoin while moving their wealth from private wallets and crypto platforms into mainstream finance.
Until recently, this service was available only to high-net-worth individuals with holdings of $25 million or more. However, BlackRock has since reduced the minimum size for such transactions to $1 million in July. Since US regulators permitted in-kind creations last summer, more digital assets have been moving into funds using this method.
Investors can simplify their holdings by exchanging their Bitcoin directly for ETF shares without selling it first. This approach avoids triggering an immediate capital-gains tax bill, depending on the investor's circumstances.
Crypto kidnappings, hacks, and custody failures have also motivated investors to make the switch. 'It's going to keep growing because we keep expanding access,' said Robbie Mitchnick, head of digital assets at BlackRock. The scale is already significant, with more than $5 billion in conversions facilitated by IBIT since last October.
The process can take over a week and involves an authorized participant or market maker handling the transfer. Minimums could fall further as more intermediaries build capacity to handle crypto, potentially opening this service beyond large holders.
