BlackRock Sees Bitcoin's Price Decline as Positioning Correction

Asset manager BlackRock has weighed in on Bitcoin's recent price decline, attributing it to extreme speculative positioning and flow shifts rather than a change in its long-term trajectory.

The firm notes that Bitcoin surged to all-time highs above $120,000 in October 2025 before retracing more than 50% to below $60,000 by June 2026. The sell-off was triggered by a macro risk-off event driven by China tariff headlines, which led to massive liquidations in highly leveraged offshore perpetual contracts.

BlackRock views the sell-off as a function of idiosyncratic deleveraging and flow dynamics, and believes Bitcoin's core investment case remains unchanged. The firm notes that a modest 1-2% allocation to Bitcoin has historically improved risk-adjusted performance in a 60/40 portfolio.

BlackRock also points out that Bitcoin's volatility has trended lower over the past decade as market structure matured, even with recent spikes in leverage in perpetual futures. The firm concludes that a measured allocation to Bitcoin is likely to remain compelling for many investors as a strategic diversifier for long-term portfolio construction.
