Blackrock Slashes Bitcoin Conversion Minimum to $1M
Blackrock has reduced the minimum threshold for converting its iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) shares into bitcoin to $1 million, a significant cut from the previous $25 million requirement. This move opens up the fund's redemption mechanism to a wider range of investors.
iShares Bitcoin Trust captured $479 million in three days last week, with spot bitcoin ETFs as a group logging five consecutive days of net inflows in early August, pulling in over $750 million on the week. The lower threshold will allow smaller institutions to redeem IBIT shares for bitcoin, which should help to tighten the fund's price tracking.
According to Blackrock's head of digital assets Robbie Mitchnick, 'bitcoiners can do in-kind exchanges of BTC for IBIT for $1 million minimum now.' This change is likely to benefit ordinary IBIT shareholders through better secondary-market liquidity and narrower bid-ask spreads over time. Additionally, converting bitcoin directly into IBIT shares in kind can avoid triggering a taxable cash sale for institutions that already hold the asset.
