BlackRock Slashes BTC ETF Conversion Threshold to $1 Million
BlackRock has lowered the minimum threshold for Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded fund (ETF) in-kind conversions to $1 million. This change allows investors with at least $1 million worth of BTC to participate in these transactions, facilitated by authorized participants and resulting in shares of BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT).
In an interview with Bloomberg analysts Eric Balchunas and Isabelle Lee, Robert Mitchnick, Head of Digital Assets at BlackRock, noted that the process remains intermediated, meaning individual investors do not directly facilitate these transactions with the company.
Mitchnick stated that while in-kind creations and redemptions remain a minority of activity within the Bitcoin ETF market, their growth has prompted the reduction of the minimum threshold. Most inflows into the market still come from new dollars rather than existing BTC holdings, according to Mitchnick.
The recent Coldcard hack was characterized by Mitchnick as a 'fairly simple, sort of amateurish error' that exposed security vulnerabilities in individual wallets or service providers. He emphasized that these incidents reflect 'individual security mismanagement issues' and underscore the appeal of regulated Bitcoin ETFs for their turnkey and trusted nature.
