BlackRock to Expand Crypto ETF Lineup Beyond Bitcoin and Ether?
Nate Geraci, president of ETF Store, predicts that BlackRock will eventually expand its spot crypto exchange-traded fund (ETF) lineup beyond Bitcoin and Ether. Currently, BlackRock offers spot crypto exposure only to these two assets through its iShares products.
As of August 26, the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) held $60.52 billion in net assets, while the non-staking Ethereum fund (ETHA) held approximately $8.26 billion. The staking-enabled ETHB held about $832.7 million and reported a 30-day staking reward rate of 1.73%.
Geraci believes that BlackRock's absence from launching spot products for other cryptocurrencies or multi-asset crypto indexes is an implicit judgment that these assets lack sufficient investment value. However, this interpretation is based on his opinion rather than any public statement from BlackRock.
The commercial case for expanding its lineup would depend on client demand, liquidity, custody support, market surveillance, and expected fund size. The existence of rival altcoin ETFs demonstrates regulatory feasibility but does not establish that another product would meet BlackRock's internal thresholds.
