BlackRock's $5B+ Bitcoin ETF Surge Fuels Shift to Regulated Products

BlackRock's Bitcoin spot ETF, IBIT, has seen a significant surge in activity. The fund has processed over $5 billion in conversions from direct Bitcoin holdings since its inception, with $2 billion of that coming in just a few months.

This is a marked increase from the $3 billion recorded in October last year, and it suggests that investors are increasingly choosing regulated exchange-traded products over self-custody. Asset managers have lowered minimum thresholds for spot conversions, making it easier for smaller holders to participate.

In addition to convenience, investors are also drawn to the reduced risks associated with self-custody, such as hacking threats and private key loss. Some may also benefit from capital gains tax advantages, depending on their jurisdiction and specific circumstances.
