BlackRock's Crypto ETF Revolution
BlackRock's Bitcoin ETF has taken the crypto market by storm since its launch in January 2024 as the iShares Bitcoin Trust, with its ticker IBIT. The fund allows ordinary investors to buy shares through a normal brokerage account, without needing to open a crypto wallet or deal with private keys.
What sets BlackRock's ETF apart is that it holds actual Bitcoins in cold storage at Coinbase, rather than futures contracts. This makes it a spot ETF, which has contributed to its rapid growth and success.
The fund has attracted billions of dollars in assets under management, including $60 billion for 2026, with institutions such as pension funds, RIAs, and hedge funds investing in it.
Despite some risks and challenges associated with the ETF, such as price volatility and concentration risk, its impact on the crypto market has been significant. It has helped to legitimize Bitcoin in traditional finance and tied its price more closely to market cycles.
