BlackRock's Dominant Spot ETF Reverses US Outflow Streak
US spot Bitcoin ETFs reversed their outflow streak on Monday, August 31, thanks to a significant influx of funds from BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT). According to Farside Investors data, IBIT supplied $205.9 million of the rebound, contributing to a net intake of $216.7 million. This was a stark contrast to Friday's outflow of $201.8 million.
The rest of the table was relatively static, with other funds adding smaller amounts: Fidelity's FBTC added $6.9 million, Bitwise's BITB brought in $4.3 million, Grayscale's Bitcoin Mini Trust took in $9.4 million, and Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust added $3.6 million. VanEck's HODL fund was the only outflow, losing $13.4 million.
This is not a new pattern for the US spot bitcoin ETF market, which has been dominated by IBIT since its launch in January 2024. BlackRock's product has become the biggest and most traded spot Bitcoin ETF, with Nasdaq noting that it options traded 353,716 contracts on their first day in November 2024.
The dominance of IBIT raises questions about market concentration and the role of other funds in the category. While price is an important factor for investors, liquidity and market depth are also critical considerations. The fact that lower-cost challengers like Morgan Stanley and Grayscale struggled to keep up with IBIT's intake suggests that these factors may be more significant than fees alone.
