BlackRock's IBIT Dominance Tests Market Resilience
BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has expanded its Authorized Participant list to nine participants, including ABN AMRO Clearing USA LLC and Goldman Sachs & Co. LLC. These participants are crucial in maintaining the liquidity and accessibility of IBIT, as they manage ETF transactions and keep the market price near the Net Asset Value (NAV).
When IBIT trades at a premium, an Authorized Participant buys underlying Bitcoin and sells ETF shares on the open market to earn a risk-free arbitrage profit. Conversely, if the fund trades at a discount, the AP redeems ETF shares for the underlying assets in the redemption basket.
The concentration of capital within a single fund is a major structural flaw, particularly with IBIT accounting for 60% to 80% of daily flows. This dominance creates a vulnerability for the market structure, as a reversal in exposure could distort perceptions of demand strength.
