BlackRock's IBIT Fund Sees $5B in Bitcoin Swaps Amid Security Concerns
BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust has seen more than $5 billion in Bitcoin-for-ETF-share swaps from private wallets into its IBIT fund. This shift gives investors a way to maintain their Bitcoin exposure while moving custody into a regulated ETF structure, addressing security concerns around self-custody.
The threshold for these conversions was lowered by BlackRock from $25 million to $1 million in July. Since then, the total volume of such swaps has climbed past $5 billion, up from over $3 billion when Bloomberg first reported on this trend last October.
BlackRock's head of digital assets, Robbie Mitchnick, attributed the growth to security scares like kidnappings, ransom situations, and custody failures. He noted that these incidents 'motivate them to make this switch for all or some of their holdings.'
The process allows holders to avoid triggering an immediate capital gains bill in many cases, as the BTC is exchanged rather than sold outright.
