BlackRock's IBIT Spot Bitcoin ETF Offers Mainstream Access to Digital Assets
BlackRock's IBIT spot Bitcoin ETF is now available to investors, providing a new way to gain exposure to Bitcoin without needing a cryptocurrency exchange or personal wallet. Unlike direct ownership of Bitcoin, this product allows investors to track the price of Bitcoin through shares in a fund that can be bought via traditional brokerage accounts.
The IBIT ETF works by holding actual BTC with a regulated custodian, providing a claim on the digital asset for shareholders. This approach has grown rapidly, attracting substantial institutional inflows and influencing market sentiment.
However, unlike direct Bitcoin purchases, spot Bitcoin ETF shares do not entitle holders to withdraw or send actual Bitcoin across the network. Instead, fund shareholders rely on their broker, fund manager, and custodian to hold and manage underlying assets.
