BlackRock's IBIT Swallows $5 Billion in Bitcoin Amid Whale Shift to Regulated ETFs

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has seen significant inflows of $5 billion in Bitcoin through private in-kind exchanges. This trend is driven by large Bitcoin holders shifting their assets into regulated exchange-traded funds, which offer security and tax benefits. The process allows eligible investors to transfer BTC directly from personal wallets to the ETF in exchange for fund shares, preserving the original cost basis of the Bitcoin.

The minimum threshold for in-kind conversions was lowered from $25 million to $1 million by BlackRock in July, making it more accessible to large investors. This change prompted competitors like Bitwise to reduce their own conversion minimums, leading to increased institutional demand for IBIT. The shift towards regulated custody is also driven by security concerns, including hacking incidents and physical threats.

Institutional demand is not limited to Bitcoin; BlackRock's Ethereum ETF (ETHA) saw $131.94 million in session inflows, while Solana's price climbed above $100. However, mixed U.S. economic data has added short-term pressure to crypto markets, with the potential for persistent inflation restraining near-term buying.
