BlackRock's IBIT Swallows Nearly Half Billion in Bitcoin Amid Market Fear

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has been quietly accumulating massive amounts of Bitcoin this week, scooping up $479 million worth in just three days. This influx represents roughly 76% of the total net inflows across all US spot Bitcoin ETFs during the same period.

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index was at an 'Extreme Fear' level of 25 when IBIT absorbed these funds, indicating that investors were buying into fear. A single session alone saw $244.4 million in inflows, according to Farside Investors data.

Since its launch in January 2024, IBIT has accumulated nearly $61 billion in cumulative net inflows, exceeding the aggregate net inflows across all US spot Bitcoin ETFs combined at approximately $52.39 billion.

The dominance of IBIT can be attributed to BlackRock's extensive distribution network, which reaches into virtually every corner of institutional finance. The structural mechanics of spot Bitcoin ETFs mean that every dollar flowing into IBIT requires the fund to purchase actual Bitcoin on the open market, creating genuine demand pressure on a finite supply asset.
