Block Unveils Plan for Open-Source Bitcoin Mining System
Block, the payments company formerly known as Square, is building an 'open Bitcoin mining system' to make cryptocurrency mining more accessible and efficient. According to Block executive Thomas Templeton, the goal is to create a decentralized and permissionless system that allows anyone, anywhere, to easily purchase and operate a mining rig.
The existing system has several drawbacks, including high costs, unpredictable delivery times, and unreliable equipment that can be prone to overheating and dust-related issues. Block aims to address these problems by providing reliable and efficient mining rigs with lower power consumption and higher hashrates, making it easier for individuals to participate in Bitcoin mining.
This move is part of a larger effort by Block to promote decentralized finance (DeFi) and cryptocurrency adoption. The company has already invested heavily in holding crypto on its balance sheet and allows consumers to buy and sell BTC through the Cash App. Additionally, several NFL athletes are receiving part of their salaries in crypto through this platform.
However, not everyone is enthusiastic about opening up Bitcoin mining to the masses. Some critics argue that it will lead to increased energy consumption and waste, citing concerns over electricity usage and environmental impact.
