Blockchain Beats Crypto: Experts Warn on Meme Coins
At The Moneyweb Summit on investment opportunities for 2026, Adam Yates, head of distribution at Peregrine Capital, warned that most meme coins are 'probably a scam'. He characterized them as 'outright gambling.'
Yates said he has a small personal position in Bitcoin, calling it the most established cryptocurrency. However, he emphasized that he doesn't invest in the broader, less-regulated crypto market.
The expert stated that for Bitcoin to be a better investment for everyday investors, it needs to be less volatile. He noted that its large price swings make it difficult for people to hold when it drops sharply in value.
Yates also highlighted the importance of blockchain technology, saying it will eventually be implemented across almost all financial markets. He described it as a 'significantly better process' than centralized dealing and praised its innovative technology.
