Blockchain.com Enters Nigeria's Regulatory Sandbox
Blockchain.com has gained entry into Nigeria's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Regulatory Incubation Program, allowing it to operate within the country's regulatory sandbox. This approval provides Blockchain.com with legal clarity to offer its services, including cryptocurrency trading, wallet solutions, and over-the-counter (OTC) trading, to Nigerian users.
The SEC's Regulatory Incubation Program is designed to provide a controlled environment for fintech and crypto businesses to test their products and services under regulatory oversight. By joining the program, Blockchain.com must meet specific compliance milestones and reporting obligations as part of its participation.
Nigeria has been actively shaping its crypto regulatory landscape. In 2021, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) restricted banks from facilitating crypto transactions, but the SEC has since been working on a framework to regulate digital assets more comprehensively. The sandbox approach reflects a shift towards fostering innovation while mitigating risks such as money laundering and consumer protection concerns.
