Blockchain Group Seeks Clarity on Equity Perpetuals in US Markets
The Blockchain Association is pushing for clearer rules on equity perpetuals in U.S. markets. The trade group filed comments with both the SEC and CFTC, arguing that a coordinated regulatory framework would allow these products to trade under American oversight.
In its submission, the association pointed out that equity perpetuals currently trade exclusively offshore due to overlapping jurisdiction between the two agencies. This results in American markets missing out on price discovery from these instruments and leaving them outside of U.S. protections.
The group recommended using existing law to address the issue without new legislation. It proposed a technology-neutral framework based on regulatory outcomes, such as transparency, auditability, market surveillance, customer asset protection, financial integrity, and operational resilience.
The association also highlighted that blockchain-based systems could support these requirements, offering market participants more choices around market infrastructure. The filing noted that prolonged ambiguity could keep liquidity, jobs, market data, and innovation offshore.
