Blockchain Transparency vs Confidentiality: Optimism Maps the Tradeoffs
Optimism has published an in-depth analysis of the tradeoffs between privacy and transparency on public blockchains. The report highlights the limitations of pseudonymous transactions, which can be easily attributed to a single identifiable link. This information can then be used for data analytics purposes, making it possible to track a wallet's history even after the fact.
The Optimism report organizes solutions according to how far they operate from a public chain, with consortium networks sacrificing verifiability and open liquidity for confidentiality among institutions that already know each other. Permissioned EVM chains preserve the execution environment but lose their anchor to Ethereum, while private L1s and L2s offer the greatest cryptographic depth.
Regulations are also converging toward selective disclosure, with privacy frameworks such as GDPR requiring data minimization in public records, and traceability frameworks restricting anonymous accounts for regulated service providers. Optimism's stance is that a chain should start from a public foundation to preserve verifiability, liquidity, and network effects, then add confidentiality wherever each use case demands it.
