Blockstream Hackers Use Bitcoin Blockchain as Wild Messaging Board

This weekend, an exploit affected Blockstream's Liquid Network, resulting in nearly 4,000 BTC being drained from its reserves.

Nearly all of this was returned on Monday by self-described white hats, who kept 598.49 BTC for themselves.

The hackers used the Bitcoin blockchain as a messaging board to communicate with Blockstream, sending each other worthless amounts of bitcoin with short messages.

The initial message from the hackers read 'we are whitehats. contact us on chain', and they later replied with 'sending most back to bc1qd…., is that ok' after returning 3,400 BTC to the federation wallet.

However, the conversation between the hackers and Blockstream was not without its noise, as a swarm of users sent dust to the wallet with their own unique messages.
