Blockstream Refuses $320M Ransom Demand for Stolen Liquid Network BTC
Blockstream, a Bitcoin and digital asset infrastructure company, has taken a firm stance against paying a ransom for $320 million in stolen BTC from the Liquid Network. On September 11, 2026, Blockstream stated that it refuses to pay any ransom, labeling the incident as a crime rather than responsible disclosure.
The hack occurred on an unspecified date and saw around 4,000 BTC withdrawn from the Liquid Network's total reserve of 4,200 BTC. The attackers later returned 85% of the stolen coins, leaving around $47 million worth of BTC still missing.
Blockstream emphasized that it has tried to work with those controlling the stolen Bitcoin but will not pay for its return. The company believes taking assets without permission and then demanding payment is not 'white hat behavior.'
